My Naked Pastor ... explained

I've been getting tons of emails and questions about our upcoming series www.mynakedpastor.com - in order to explain it a little better, I've decided to share a post from my co-worker & friend Heather from her LeadHership blog- you can read it here or simply scroll down below. Thanks HP - nicely put!

My church is getting naked, and so is my pastor! No...not that kind of naked, a new kind of naked. A revolutionary kind of naked. A nakedness that has no shame; a nakedness that would make God smile. Beginning Sept. 9 at 8pm, our church is putting our pastor on a 24-hr webcam. We are going to see him in his fishbowl - the good, the bad, the great, the ugly - for FIVE weeks. Not too exalt him, but to realize, thru him & with him, that we're all fish in a bowl. Which simply means the more transparent (naked) we get, the more permeating Jesus Christ can be. We aren't called to be children in hiding, concealment, or shame. God has called us by name, we are His, and we are to be naked and unashamed in HIS light for HIS glory. So, get ready, 'cause on Sept. 9, Flamingo's going in a bowl.. - Heather

And by the way - 9.9 @ 9 (September 9 @ 9 PM) !!We will be having the party of the year !! But to get invited, you need to submit a video here Food, Fun, Prizes and much more ... all at the Naked Pastor's house! You're gonna want to be there! Good Luck!

Rain Down ...

I am still speechless over the blessed day I just had...so, for now I will simply paste my wife's post - or you can read it here All I've got to say is: "Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer." Romans 12:12 God is Great ! I'll post more details when I catch my breath...

From Marcy Ribeiro:

Thank you, first of all, to everyone who has been praying for my husband for these several years over his immigration situation. My husband went in today to court to figure out what would happen next. I just got his phone call on such awesome news. Now, I don't know all the details, but what the lawyer wanted happened. Oh, I am so grateful and, Lord, I love you. Your will is so perfect!!! The bottom line is that they terminated Heredes' case, which means that he can start from scratch and be able to get his paper work all fixed within a couple of months. The judges heard his story, cried, and believed him. God is a God of justice. Amen!

So, our request now is that the next few steps would run smoothly and, if all possible, quickly.

To my family in Brazil: this is what you guys have been praying for and hoping for. Obrigado por tudo! Pr. Jamil, Elzeli, Sarah, & Higor I love you guys and we really believe that soon we will see each other. Beijos pra voces y que Deus a bencao voces muito.
And thank you to my family as well for their prayers, help, and I know they are excited about their son-in-laws news. Thank you everyone!!!

Please don't forget to keep praying for Peru and the families hurting and for the Christians there to reach out.

- Marcy

Ohh ... and if that weren't enough - we were given a car today by our friends The Palacios - yup that's right (not a typo) - GIVEN! It's a stinking awesome Huge Chevy Tahoe! Can you believe that?! Thanks guys! Still speechless...

When God blesses - it pours! So...Rain Down !!

Peru Earthquake Update

Here's an update from our FRC Lima,Peru Campus Pastor:

Earthquake Update: 350 dead in Peru and 1,000 injured. Mass devastation south of Lima, in cities of Ica, Chincha, Pisco, 4-5 hours south of Lima. Houses, buildings, hospitals collapsed. We are trying to make contact with a pastor and with relatives of FRC Lima folks that live in the area. 60% of all houses collapsed in that area. Tsunami warnings all night in Lima, but may have passed. Many aftershocks all night as well. Damage in Lima less than in south, but still several deaths and much structural damage, particularly in center of Lima. Girls at orphanage are all OK physically, but very scared. Older girls were returning from school when earthquake hit, but made it back safely. They are all very scared today. We’ll probably go there later on today to be with them. We’re OK. Some structural damage to our building. Lots of things broken. Pictures fell off wall, broken glass, etc. Ran down 5 flights of stairs to escape from building with debris, scaffolding, falling all around me. Surreal when it happened. Giant white lights in the night sky, and office towers swaying back and forth. Lots of clean-up to do now. Thinking about how best to get relief to cities in the south where it hit hardest. May go there. Thanks for your prayers. Please keep praying. Much devastation here.

Steve

Let's keep them in our prayers... If you would like to partner with us as we reach out to the spiritual and physical needs of Peru…please contact Raul Palacios for more information. We can make a difference if we work together…Your gifts and talents matter…

Trip Update # 5

Simply amazing ... Powell is an out of this world leader! Below are the "golden" nuggets of information he passed along in his interview today at the Summit...

Collin Powell
on Leadership

Promote a Clash of Ideas
-allow lots of flowers to bloom and allow clashes - let them flourish!
-argue/discuss/ but get it it out and allow leaders/followers to join - as a result they will execute with the same passion and energy

The noisy System

-Powell Strategies (sit at round table, change seats, create discussion to extract thoughts) - allow people to feel they contribute

-Plans and charts don't accomplish work - People do!
-Leader has responsibility to place followers in proper environment to accomplish the work.

Maintain an open door policy
-"the emperor has no close" approach

Probe the organization
- breaking the chain of command (solve it by addressing the problems)

Reward your best performers, Get rid of non-performers
- letting people go is tough but necessary
- pruning the organization

Be prepared to disappoint people
- leaders are not meant to be liked - they lead
- Separate emotional & professional

Have fun in your command
- hobbies/fun activities have a solution
- we need something that takes us out of the routine

Fit no stereotypes
- we must be judged by our performance alone (not race, color or age)
- expectations - "your going to school - period!
- sense of shame - "do not shame your family"

Perpetual Optimism is a force multiplier
- it is infectious

Things always look better in the morning
- Powell had daily short staff meetings - built trust and confidence - synergy
- set clear goals for them
- communicate with passion
- inspire them
- all for the organization and it's values

Avoid war if at all possible
- War is failed politics - Powell
- Even the greatest strategist will eventually encounter the enemy - Powell

Trust the element of Instinct
- Blink! go with the gut

Prepare to be lonely
- Leadership is lonely
- We must find ways to deal with it - someone to help with load
- We must also be the outlet for other leaders

-Positions/titles are {fine} but they will come to an end! - Powell
-All of us have a debt of service we may never repay - Powell

I am posting this now .. but will be digesting it for quite a while .. very practical and insightful.

Trip Update # 4

Michael Porter
(Harvard professor)
Session 5

The guru of strategic planning ! Read more about him here

At best we're ineffective - at worst we cause harm" - Michael Porter on the church

How do we do well at doing good?

Our organizations (churches) get involved in many many things and create chaos by not truly addressing the needs of the people.

Strategic Principles

We must shift our mindset - the mindset of charity & philanthropy
We must believe we're doing them a service - customer service
We must put ourselves in the shoe of the recipient

Important Questions -

Have we clearly defined what our goals are ?
What set of community services and needs should we attend to?
Whats our strategy in executing? delivering value ?
How do we get the organization to align / to make choices?

Good intentions are not enough ... charity is not enough.

We create value if we uses the resources to create social benefit

We need to ask ourselves: where can we do the most good with the best resources we have?

If someone is doing a good job at something - support them. Partner with other churches/organizations.

Where can we do more than just giving money? or unskilled labor?

Things that get in the way of strategic services:

1. Lack of clarity on our goal
2. Lack of focus
3. Misplaced resources
4. Lack of partnership

It's the churches job to motivate the outside communitty/organizations to do good.

In other words ....

PARTNERING WITH PEOPLE IN REACHING THEIR GOD POTENTIAL!

Way ahead of you Porter .... j/k - Great lecture - I wish I could've seen the teaching slides though - it would've helped. Porter needs to go church though ... I might send him a link to our internet campus.

Trip Update # 3

Just finished watching Marcus Buckingham (our fourth session of the day)...
I have seen Buckingham before and was extremely impressed by his leadership at such a young age - read more about him here. I have posted the audio mp3 files from that session (which is the same one from the Summit 07') right here - enjoy!

My notes are attached below ... go find your strengths!

Marcus Buckingham

"Build on my strengths and manage around my weaknesses"

BUST THE MYTHS

What stops us from becoming one of the two out of ten? Ourselves. What we believe often gets in our way and because we believe we do nothing to ensure our beliefs are the truth. Think about these myths and truths for a moment:

MYTH: As you grow your personality changes.
TRUTH: As you grow you become more of who you are.

MYTH: You will grow most in the area of your greatest weakness.
TRUTH: You will grow the most in the areas of your greatest strengths.

MYTH: A good team member does whatever it takes to help the team.
TRUTH: A good team member deliberately volunteers his/her strengths to the team most of the time.

Ask yourself:
How would it benefit me to believe the truths?
What would it change in my work or life?

GET CLEAR

Do you find it tough to articulate your strengths? Do you think they are best identified by others based on your results?

Buckingham states strengths can be identified by four "SIGNs":

Success: strengths are activities you are good at AND which fulfill you and sustain you in life.
Instinct: strengths have an I-can't-help-but- quality. You feel a pull toward these activities and look forward to doing them even when they scare you.
Growth: These are areas where you learn the most, come up with the most new ideas, and have the best insights. You feel inquisitive about this field of endeavor or activity, you want to learn more, practice, and refine your skill. When you are engaged in this activity you have focus.
Need: How you feel after you have completed this activity? Chances are you have that all-is-right-with-the-world feeling. Strengths make you feel strong.

It is this feeling that makes strength identification a very personal thing. No one else knows how you feel when doing something. You may do something wonderfully but loathe it. Hint: not a strength.

Here Buckingham introduced a simple yet powerful tool: the Strength Statement. Simple, not easy, it is a precise, specific-to-you statement detailing what makes you feel strong. It is a statement that moves you every time you read it. These Strength Statements are the guideposts for what you need to do more of on the job.

FREE YOUR STRENGTHS

Freeing your strengths entails doing more of what comes naturally to you. At work this sounds easier than it is as most of our work addresses the needs of someone or something other than ourselves. Buckingham suggests asking this question: How can I use my strengths to fulfill my customer's needs, meet or renegotiate the expectations of my boss and/or honor my career aspirations.

The Strong Week Plan
is the tool for this job. Again simple but powerful in its awareness building and planning aspects, the Strong Week Plan is used for reviewing the past week, predicting the coming week and identifying two specific actions to free your strengths in the coming seven days. Of course the catch is you. Will you do what you promised yourself?

I have personally learned and grown from Buckingham's leadership and strength sharpening tools - his books are practical and his principles are cross platform - whether you lead at church / business / school or at home! Go - Now find YOUR Sstrengths!

Trip Update #2

Session one at the Summit is over .. Bill Hybels was phenomenal - he has so much wisdom and experience - pure gold! Hybel's church ... Willow Creek - is one of the leading churches in the country in pretty much every area... every growing church in the country today should thank Hybels for his leadership and visioneering - here are my notes on his session:

VISION TO DIE FOR (OWNING THE VISION)
by Bill Hybels

A vision is the painting of a picture that produces passion in people - Hybels
A vision that is quickly projected may not be deeply owned - it takes time
A vision MUST be deeply owned
The world's most compelling vision is worthless if no one deeply owns it.
It's all about OWNERSHIP
People will pray, give to,value, promote and even die for a vision they own

PROCESS - pastors hate it - people need it!!

1. Vision Formation
---Sinai Approach - pastor alone retreats and reveals
---Team Approach - what does God want for our church to look like 5 years from now?
"People don't always have to have their way - they just need to have their way considered" - Hybels

2. Vision Refinement
---First Draft - team meets prays creates and roughs it out
---Subsequent Drafts - the wet cement presented to other specific groups (ask people what excites/discourages you?) allow them to give feedback - people feel valued

3. Vision Declaration -
---Solo Activity - preparation from visioneer to deliver vision is important - refining the delivery
---Team Activity -

Vision leaks ...
"Don't beat the Sheep out of your people!" - Hybels - we must help & remind our people

Celebrate Accomplishments - well told story telling people about the progress (videos)

Application ...
Are you willing to die for the vision God has called you to do ?
Are you a hireling or an owner of the vision?

Acts 21 (Paul's church in Ephesus - new vision from God to Paul - sending him to Jerusalem - Paul says yes and goes)
" I am ready not only to be bound for this vision but to die for this vision in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ" - Paul

Singles determining factor of followers owning the vision is the extent that they think that the leader owns it ! (ethos + 50,100,150 + one church where you are)

Leaders come to Christ (saved) + Leader gets Vision from God (inspired) + Then two options = Hireling vs Owners - which one will you choose?

Great first session.... glad to be here!

Here it is:
It's what happens when parents ask their kids to stop playing with their food: they begin playing with their forks! Ouch ...

Coldplay + Church = New Album!

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls....this is the post I've been waiting for. I bring to you news on one of my favorite bands: Coldplay. Now...... what's better than a new Colplay album? A Coldplay album recorded at churches across Europe with a Hispanic theme! I can't wait ... it's as if they know me, it's as if they asked themselves ... "what would Heredes do?" "what would Heredes enjoy?" :) Dont let me down Coldplay...

check out this weeks MTV press release:

Coldplay Go To Church!
Say New Album Will Be Blessed With 'Hispanic Theme'

By James Montgomery of MTV

Coldplay's fourth album is shaping up to be quite the affair: Brian Eno behind the decks, recording sessions at church altars and — apparently — a "strengthening Hispanic theme."

That's according to the bandmembers themselves, who posted a handwritten message on their site detailing the recording of their follow-up to 2005's X&Y, which they're working on in Barcelona, Spain. But before you get all excited for flamenco guitars and paeans to paella, remember, this is Coldplay we're talking about.

"The sights, sounds and flavors of Latin America and Spain have definitely been infused into this album. The band visited Argentina, Chile, Brazil and Mexico earlier this year. Chris [Martin] then came up with the idea of recording in Spain," the post reads. "The music and lyrics have begun to reflect the strengthening Hispanic theme. No maracas or castanets, but a vibrancy and colorfulness that owes much to the atmospheres of Buenos Aires [Argentina] and Barcelona. The effect is subtle but important."

See, subtle. That's sort of been the theme Coldplay have employed for album number four. After all, the "announcement" that they were working with Eno didn't come via some wordy press release, but rather through an offhand comment the producer made in a BBC Radio interview back in February (see "Break's Over: Coldplay Tap Super-Producer Brian Eno For X&Y Follow-Up"). And that news came on the heels of the announcement that the band wasn't working on an album at all — rather, Coldplay were settling in to enjoy "a much-deserved break," according to a spokesperson for their label, Capitol (see "No Five-Year Hiatus For Coldplay — But They Are Taking A Break").

And for their upcoming album, they're even keeping their travel subtle: trekking from church to church, recording on the fly. It's a manner somewhat unbecoming for one of the biggest rock acts in the world and its mega-famous producer, but according to the post, everyone seems to be enjoying the whole "under-the-radar" shtick.

"We've been traveling light — an acoustic guitar, a couple of mics, a laptop and some headphones. We're recording in Barcelona, moving from church to church, setting up where we can: in front of the altar, under the pulpit," the post continues. "We've been playing at the feet of archangels. It's an odd scene: a host of saints look down impassively upon four unkempt band members, circled around a single mic stand, singing loudly together as recorded guitars reverberate around the church. They're laying down backing vocals. Brian often joins them: group singing is one of his greatest joys."

Funny, we always pegged Eno for more of a song-and-dance man. Anyway, earlier posts on Coldplay's site also indicate that Eno's longtime collaborator Markus Dravs is also along for the ride, and that the band has been working on 25 "pieces" of music for the new album. But there's still no release date or title, and Capitol had no additional information about the project when contacted by MTV News.

Any fans out there?
