For all you iKea haters out there .... here are two simple reasons to go at least once:

1. 99¢ breakfast
2. Swedish LingonBerry Juice

For the record... Marcy and I were one of the first 2500 to enter the store (we got $10 giftcards each and a bunch of other junk) our buds Raul & Tati were on the top 100 and got some pretty cool stuff. They spent the night though - crazy! ;)

Across the Universe - Film Review

Before I even attempt to review this film ... allow me to disclaim:

“Across the Universe” is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). It has nudity, sexual situations, drug use, mild violence and some strong language.

PLEASE DO NOT TAKE YOUR KIDS :)

A film for fans of Moulin Rouge, Cirque Du Soleil & Hairspray - watching AtU was like watching a Beatles concert through a Kaleidoscope while Sipping a Slurpee and getting various brain freezes. Good Stuff!

The film was as close to the 60's as I have ever been. Not my favorite ... but I am a sucker for modern musicals - so it does make it to my top 10. Julie Taymor (who also directed Broadway's Lion King) did a great job in using Beatles songs to plot out a unique hippie/historical love story. Waiting for the DVD. Visually stunning, musically pleasing... I give it an overall 3 1/4 stars. The song interpretations were adequate ... not as creative as Moulin Rouge's medleys but very well covered - some better than others. I did buy the "deluxe" soundtrack. Here are some tunes worth listening to (or at least checking out on youtube):

"Girl" - Jim Sturgess (sounds just like moulin rouge's intro) Great voice!
"Let it Be"
- Carol Woods & Timothy Mitchum (amazing gospel rendition)

"I am the Walrus"
- sung by Bono - enough said

"Revolution"
- one of my favorite Fab Four tunes - Motion Graphics amazing!

"Black Bird"
- beautiful girl rendition by Evan Rachel Wood
"Benefit of Mr. Kite" - by comedian Eddie Izzard - great "cirque style" moment

"Hey Jude"
- classic , well used as a climatic turning point in the film

"All you need is Love"
- sung from the rooftop 'a-la' U2 - original still much better

"Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"
- also done by Bono who played a role in the film

Enjoy Responsibly ...

Leadership from Welch

Just some quick thoughts worth posting from Jack Welch's book "Winning" - I decided to post this mainly as a reminder to myself but I hope you can benefit from it as well.

What to look for in a leader...

Beside the basics: Integrity, Intelligence & Emotional Maturity - Welch describes some valuable traits to look for in leaders

  • Positive Energy - capacity to go-g0-go with a healthy vigor and upbeat attitude through the good and bad
  • Energize Others - the ability to influence and impact others with that positive attitude
  • Edge - the ability to make tough calls - to say yes or no (not maybe)
  • Execute - simply put : ability to get things done
  • Passion: a leader cares, believes and sweats for it.

Welch then goes on to describe how a leader's success is measured by how well one grows others. A leader makes his people better, stronger, smarter, bolder. In a nutshell: your success as a leader comes not from what you do every day but from the reflected glory of your team's performance.

Great Book ... I highly recommend it.

Catching up ...

Couple of things worth mentioning have gone down this week... allow me to catch you up.
  • I have taken over 10 free songs from the Starbucks + iTunes partnership. So far my favorite artists have been "Ceu" , "Band of Horses" & "Emily King" Get them this month while they're hot. Free with purchase of any drink - remember , you have to ask for them!

  • myChurch had its second week of serving over 8,000 people on a weekend. Go Flamingo!

  • my Church was also listed as the 10th fastest growing church in America by Outreach magazine. Download the list here. Once again: Go Flamingo!

  • I had the opportunity to co-teach a conference session with my friend Heather on how we creatively plan our weekend experiences. I was a bit nervous teaching a room full of lead Pastors but was grateful for the opportunity.

  • We're doing a BonJovi song this weekend at every campus - maybe the first time in church history that Jovi comes to church - you gotta come and see it !

  • Marcy and I are all caught up with the new season of Heroes. It is awesome! Get caught up here if you're not.

  • Saturday I turn 25! Scary ...a quarter century gone by so fast.. the best is yet to come...
